CCleaner 1.40.520 still fails to comply to Vista’s UAC

Saturday, May 26th, 2007

CCleaner 1.40.520 Screenshot A few days ago, Piriform unleashed a new version of its PC cleaning tool: CCleaner 1.40.520.

Among the notable changes are the improvements to the program’s compatibility with Windows Vista’s User Account Control (UAC) feature.

However, posts on the official CCleaner forum indicate some (new?) bugs still plague the program’s functionality when UAC is enabled. Namely, when storing settings to an .ini files, they will not be saved correctly. The same UAC incompatibility affects CCleaner’s “Issues” scanner which fails to function as designed in most cases.

It must be noted though that running the program as Administrator, which bypasses the UAC, enables CCleaner to work as it should. Another solution would be to disable UAC completely, but this might put your computer in danger if you are not an advanced user. If you still wish to do so, simply choose one of the four ways to disable UAC.

The new version also brings forth some improvements to the secure delete routines, to the uninstall tool, Windows Live toolbar cleaning, updates to UI translations and other minor bugfixes.

CCleaner 1.39.502 - Faster Secure File Deletion

Wednesday, April 18th, 2007

CCleaner 1.39.502 Screenshot It’s time for a new CCleaner release. We want our regular share of improvements and fixes.. and new features!

It’s here and it has a new secure file deletion routine (twice as fast, according to the developer, hmmm).

The usual improvements to cleaning were not forgotten: better Internet files removal, Recycle Bin handling and cleaning lots and lots of temp files.

Support for two new software pieces has been added: AntiVir PE Classic and Premium. There’s also a dropped product: PerfectDisk 8.0. According to the CCleaner forums, this was done because the program’s logfiles are somehow hardcoded into the program itself.

Last but not least: new translations! (Bosnian and Macedonian).

I tested this version on Windows Vista and it worked like a charm for both installation and cleaning.

Today in Vista-compatible applications: Vandyke’s SecureCRT 5.5

Saturday, February 10th, 2007

SecureCRT 5.5 Beta 1 ScreenshotFollowing the latest trend, Vandyke Software started updating their applications to comply with the Windows Vista guidelines. First is SecureCRT, the renowned SSH/Telnet client, with the 5.5 Beta 1 version released on the 8th of February.

A nice addition is the New Session Wizard, which makes creating new connections a snap. Of course, it exposes only the basic options, so you might still want to open the advanced properties dialog if you need to make advanced changes (eg: specify the terminal emulation setting).

There is now a script recorder included with the program, which records all keystrokes in the current sessions and outputs VB scripts.

A nice touch is the autosessions option, which allows for multiple sessions or entire folders to be launched at SecureCRT’s startup.

The logging system got an interesting addition as well: users can define custom data bits to be added to logs. Optionally, logs will include only these custom bits.

SecureCRT 5.5 Beta 1 ScreenshotAmong the SSH protocol related changes and fixes, one stands out most: zlib@openssh is now supported, which prevents the zlib library from caching unencrypted passwords by enabling compression compression only after the authentication sequence.

*** WHAT’S NEW IN SECURECRT 5.5 BETA 1 ***

New features:
- Windows Vista support.
- Added a script recorder, which generates VB scripts. When “Start Recording Script” is selected from the Script menu, all keystrokes in the current session are recorded until “Stop Recording Script” is selected.
- A set of sessions can be launched automatically on startup by specifying folders or multiple sessions as auto sessions.
- Added the ability to insert custom data to log files. Custom data can be inserted when a session connects, disconnects, or on each line. Substitution parameters for session, date, and time information are supported. Additionally, there is an
option to log only custom data.
- When ANSI color is being used, it is now possible to use a color scheme, which allows the background to be something other than black and the foreground to be something other than white.
- Added script function GetScriptTab, which returns the tab from which the script was started.
- Added new custom menu item MENU_TAB_LIST1, which causes all the tabbed sessions to be displayed in the menu.
- SFTP: Added “ascii” and “binary” command options to the SFTP tab.
- SSH2: Added support for generating OpenSSH format keys and for converting VanDyke format private keys to OpenSSH format.
- SSH2: Added a global option to cache passwords for SSH2 sessions.
- SSH2: Added support for zlib@openssh.com compression. With this compression method, compression does not start until after authentication, which prevents unencrypted passwords from being cached by the zlib library.

Changes:
- By default, Internet Explorer 7 disables Telnet through a registry setting. Added support for overriding this setting so that SecureCRT can be set as the default Telnet application.
Administrator privileges are required in order to override the setting. Versions of Internet Explorer prior to 7 are not affected by this change.
- When multiple sessions are opened from the “Connect” dialog, if the “Open in a tab” setting is off, the sessions are opened in tabs in a new window.
- The chat window can now be toggled when SecureCRT is maximized or full screen.
- When creating a session, if the Terminal, VT100, or VT102 font is selected, the “Use Unicode line-drawing characters” will be unchecked.
- The “Save connected folder state” option was moved from the “Connect” dialog to the “General” page in the “Global Options” dialog.
- Files with .VBE extension are included in the Script Files filter in the “Select Script to Run” dialog.

Bug fixes:
- Under certain circumstances, text was highlighted incorrectly after highlighted text had been pasted into a session.
- Under certain circumstances, when SecureCRT got an error and became unresponsive, the Migration wizard ran.
- It was not possible to cancel out of the “Global Options” dialog if an incorrect status indicator width or minimum tab width was entered.
- When using send string functionality with a mapped key, \p (pause) did not work correctly.
- If the specified log file was a valid path, but did not have a filename and the “Prompt for filename” option was not set, when logging started, an error that the specified file could not be created was reported.
- If a script that connected to a session was run in a tabbed session that had been disconnected, the script hung.
- The script function ConnectInTab used the default session font instead of the specified session’s font.
- The /SCRIPT command-line argument was not honored when /T was used and the session was opened in a tab other than the first tab.
- SSH1: The command-line option /I pubkeyfile command-line option did not work with /SSH1.
- SSH2: Under certain circumstances, using a SOCKS proxy caused the Secure Shell transport to hang.

FlashGet: your freeware download manager. Now with torrents!

Sunday, February 4th, 2007

FlashGet 1.81 ScreenshotFlashGet has been my favourite download manager since forever (actually, since it was called JetCar). It’s fast, fully-featured (mms:// downloads anyone?) and it doesn’t hog on your system’s resources.

There was only one drawback: it was based on an adware model - unregistered versions displayed in-program advertisement banners. However, starting last year, a great deal of changes came from AmazeSoft’s way, the most important being FlashGet became a freeware product. That’s right, the best download manager is FREE! Read on for more goodies…

Since version 1.80 beta 1, FlashGet is compatible with Windows Vista, so if you plan to upgrade to Microsoft’s new shiny OS, you won’t have to leave FlashGet behind.

FlashGet is also a fully-featured BitTorrent client, including protocol compression. I still prefer uTorrent for my usual torrenting, but FlashGet is a decent alternative if you prefer to use less programs for the same amount of tasks.

Addons are supported now, with two being made available by AmazeSoft: FlashCheck (manage your downloads remotely) and FlashGWQ (remote bandwidth manager).

Aside the above, the program has been constantly improved in terms of stability, download speed, browser integration (the FlashGet BHO works fine with IE7) and user interface (new icon theme and skins).

Recap: don’t even dare ask if it’s worth installing - you can’t afford not to install it. Go ahead and give it a try, but be prepared to fall in love with it.

CCleaner now works better with Vista and 64-bit operating systems

Saturday, February 3rd, 2007

CCleaner 1.37.456 ScreenshotThat’s how this CCleaner release can be summarized: improved compatibility with Microsoft’s newly launched Windows Vista and with 64-bit Windows versions. Both are important, especially the first, now that Vista’s been launched and started popping up in stores and in major PC manufacturers’ offers.

Apart from these improvements, some interesting additions are included in CCleaner 1.37.456, such as the ability to save the program’s settings in an INI file instead of placing them into the Windows Registry; this allows for easier recovery of the settings in case of registry failure or if the program itself is copied to another computer.

More leaning routines have also been added to CCleaner for the latest releases of popular software titles such as Adobe Reader 8.0, IZArc, OpenOffice 2.1 and PerfectDisk 8.0.

See below for the downloads and detailed changelog information.

PS: Another thing worth noting about Piriform’s products is that they’ve recently launched a new title - Recuva (recover) - which is a freeware file recovery tool. It will be covered here as soon as I get the time to test it.

WinRAR embarks on the Vista wave!

Tuesday, January 16th, 2007

WinRAR 3.71 Screenshot It was high time WinRAR joined the Vista-compatible club, and this new beta accomplishes just that.

WinRAR 3.71 Beta 1 packs a host of changes, many of which aim to make the program more compliant to the Windows Vista standards. This is obvious if we take a look at the new help facility, which dropped the old HLP format in favor of the (not-so-new-anymore) CHM system, a change that does not affect the program’s functionality, but was demanded by the Vista guidelines.

The other changes are, however, more noticeable. WinRAR now complies to the new security model and makes use of the administrator permission dialogs Vista users are already accustomed with. Logfiles, themes, settings and regkeys are now stored by default in the %APPDATA%\WinRAR folder, which is the preferred method in Vista (still, users can specify a different, custom folder).

From the non-Vista-related changes crowd the following stand out: UDF support for the ISO format, Unicode support for filenames in ISO images, design changes in the “Extract” dialog and a stack overflow fix.

Downloads and useful links follow. The detailed list of changes in this release is also included.

*** WHAT’S NEW IN WINRAR 3.71 BETA 1 ***

1. Numerous Windows Vista compatibility changes:

a) help format changed from old HLP to newer HTML based CHM;

b) GUI self-extracting modules attempt to request for
administrator permissions if they cannot create destination
folder under current user account;

c) Log file rar.log and WinRAR theme files are stored
in %APPDATA%\WinRAR folder instead of WinRAR program files folder.

Exported settings file settings.reg is also stored
in %APPDATA%\WinRAR folder by default, but it is possible to
select another folder in “Save WinRAR settings” and “Load WinRAR
settings” dialogs.

WinRAR searches for registration key and settings.reg
both in its program files folder and in %APPDATA%\WinRAR;

d) Vista compatibility changes in WinRAR shell integration.

2. Added support for ISO 13346 (UDF) file format. This format
is frequently used in ISO images of DVD disks.

3. Added Unicode support for ISO 9660 files, so WinRAR should
handle non-English file names in .iso files better.

4. Design changes in window displaying archiving and extraction
progress:

a) it provides more space for file names, allowing lengthy names;

b) it displays the current archive name in separate line,
allowing much longer archive names than before;

c) when archiving, it displays the current compression ratio
in separate line;

d) it can use both standard Windows and classic WinRAR progress bars.
Turn on “Windows progress bars” option in WinRAR “Settings/General”
dialog to use standard progress bars. By default this option is
on if some Windows visual style is active and off if Windows Classic
theme is selected.

Windows progress bars are two color only, so they do not indicate
the current compression ratio. But now the ratio is displayed
in separate line;

e) “Mode…” button moved to bottom of window.

5. GUI self-extracting modules support following command line
switches:

-d set the destination path
-p specify a password
-s silent mode, hide all
-s1 same as -s
-s2 silent mode, hide start dialog
-sp specify parameters for setup program

6. GUI self-extracting modules do not pass the entire command line
to setup program like they did in previous versions.
If you need to get access to entire command line of SFX archive,
parse sfxcmd environment variable which contains this command line.

7. New switch -sc[objects] allowing to select character
sets for archive comments and list files. It replaces -fcu switch
introduced in RAR 3.60, which was removed from list of supported
switches. Now you need to specify -scuc instead of -fcu to use
Unicode comments. Unlike -fcu, -sc also supports OEM and ANSI charset.

8. New “Save archive copy as…” command in “File” menu.
This command may be useful if you opened an archive from Internet
directly in WinRAR and then decided to save it on local disk.

9. “Word wrap” command added to “View” menu of WinRAR internal viewer,
so you can change the wrapping mode of already opened viewer window.

State of this option is not stored between viewing sessions.
If you need to change the default word wrap mode, use WinRAR
“Settings/Viewer” dialog.

10. Buttons “Up” and “Down” added to “Organize profiles” dialog.
Using these buttons you can change position of selected profile
in the list.

11. Operation progress is displayed when adding the recovery record.

12. If WinRAR is minimized to tray and mouse is over its icon,
WinRAR diplays a message about the current operation progress.
In previous versions it included only percent done, now it also
contains the time left information.

13. Console RAR displays “Calculating the control sum” message
when calculating CRC32 control sum for newly created RAR volume.
Previous versions also calculated the volume control sum,
but did it silently.

14. Archives history list in “File” menu allows Unicode names,
providing more reliable support for non-English archive names.

15. Stack overflow vulnerability has been corrected in password
processing module of console RAR and UnRAR. GUI WinRAR is not
affected. We are thankful to the iDEFENSE LABS for reporting this bug.

TreeSize Free improved for Windows Vista

TreeSize joins the Vista-Compatible Club!

Sunday, November 5th, 2006

TreeSize 4.1 ScreenshotJAM Software’s new version of TreeSize, 4.1.0.302, packs quite a host of new features and improvements, but the highlight is surely its compatibility with Microsoft’s Windows Vista. Unfortunately, there’s also a drawback to this, but more on that later. First, let’s go through the notable additions to TreeSize 4.1 …

… starting off with the multithreaded scanning improvements which make network scans twice as fast.

In order to help users take advantage of every bit of free (or free-able) HDD space, a shortcut to the configuration dialog for the Windows System Restore has been added in the Tools menu. (System Restore typically reserves around 10% of each HDD partition, so changing this setting will free some space up).

Multiple changes were applied to the File Search module, mostly related to the program’s user interface. Check the changelog for full details…

Now on to fixes: a race condition bug sometimes caused the main program’s settings to be overwritten by the File Search module. Additionally, a minor GUI issue was resolved.

Earlier I was speaking about a drawback in TreeSize 4.1 caused by its compatibility with Windows Vista. The problem is that Vista’s Explorer does not (yet?) allow column extensions, so the useful “treesize” column cannot work.

*** WHAT’S NEW IN TREESIZE 4.1.0.302 ***

· Multithreaded scanning has been improved which makes especially network scans up to two times faster.
· A new tab “File Ages” has been added to the right pane. It shows the distribution of the file ages for each directory.
· The Extensions, Users and Top 100 lists as well as the result list of the File Search now have a right click menu for their column headers which allows to show or hide individual columns. Columns can be rearranged using drag&drop. These settings are saved when TreeSize is closed and are restored on the next start.
· The list of file types on the tab “Extensions” now fills up faster.
· The Details tab now also has a toolbar. It can be turned off using the “Toolbar” submenu in the “View” menu.
· Folders that could not be scanned due to an error are now shown with a small exclamation mark in the directory tree. The error message is added to the tooltip of this folder.
· A new option allows to decide if date and time should be shown for the last access, last modified and the creation date, or only the date.
· The Tools menu now has a menu item that opens the configuration dialog for the Windows System Restore. The Windows System Restore by default uses 10-15% of every hard disk drive. A good source for freeing disk space is the reduction of this space reserved for the System Restore.
· The unit and the decimals of the TreeSize column for the Windows Explorer can now be configured in the Options of TreeSize Pro on the new tab “Shell Extensions”. Furthermore the Explorer extension can now be fully turned off here.
· The context menu item “Find deepest nesting” is now not only available in the context menu of the root folder but also in the context menu of the subfolders.
· The drive panel now uses a different color to show the free space as the Details view uses in the column “% of Parent”.
· It is now possible to copy the content of the drive panel to the clipboard in a CSV-compatible format.
· TreeSize is now compatible with Windows Vista. The Vista Explorer however lacks the interface for extending it with additional columns, so the TreeSize column is currently not available for the Windows Vista Explorer.

· File Search: The right click menu now allows applying the NTFS-compression to the selected files in a result list.
· File Search: The visibility of columns in the result lists can now be adjusted on the “View Options” tab.
· File Search: Compressed files are now shown in a different color, just like in the main application. For compressed files, their compressed size is now shown instead of the uncompressed size.
· File Search: The result list of the temporary file search now shows the reason why a file or folder was added to the list (e.g. the matching pattern, because it is a link with an invalid target etc.)
· File Search: Drives removed from the drive list window now stay excluded when the application is started the next time.

· Bugfix: The selected item of the tree in the main windows was not always drawn correctly.
· Bugfix: The File search module sometimes overwrote settings of the main module if both modules were running and the File Search module was terminated after the main module.
· Bugfix: Removing a currently scanned folder temporarily from TreeSize occasionally resulted in an error.
