uTorrent - Anytime, Anywhere (WebUI)
The much awaited uTorrent WebUI is now open for public testing, which means that anyone interested can download the WebUI 0.300 beta package and check it out. That is, anyone interested except IE6 users. WebUI is just not designed to work on IE6.Note: According to Pleh of the uTorrent Forums, there is now a Flash interface for the WebUI, which works on all browsers supporting Flash, including Internet Explorer 6. The FlashUI is now in open beta; I will post more on this in a few hours, once I get to test it myself.
When downloading the WebUI kit, you will be getting a beta version of uTorrent 1.6.1 (build 481), the web frontend application (webui.zip) and, due to licensing reasons, a copy of the license text for a component used in the WebUI (Sortable Table/ColumnList). Speaking of components, WebUI uses several pieces of Javascript to perform actions such as drag&drop and browser detection, some of which can be found on this website.
How to set up WebUI
1) Download the WebUI 0.300 beta package
2) Extract the contents of the archive and copy the uTorrent executable to your uTorrent folder.
3) Start uTorrent (make sure it is the new 1.6.1 version) and enable WebUI in the preferences dialog (Preferences -> Advanced -> WebUI). Set the username and password for logging in to WebUI. You may change the port if you wish.
4) Fire up your favorite browser (Firefox recommended) and point it to http://Username:Password@YourIP:UTport/gui/index.html
5) Enjoy (the included docs also mention this: "If the webui gets stuck on the 'Loading...' page, try to request http://YourIP:UTport/gui/?action=setsetting&s=webui.cookie&v={} and then reload", but it worked from the first try for me.
After setting up WebUI and starting uTorrent, you will be able to access it from remote locations. You can view and manage the currently downloading torrents, add new downloads and do pretty much everything you could have done if you were in front of your computer, at home.
WebUI is designed to mimic the look, feel and functionality of the original program, and it succeeds at doing so in most respects.Almost everything in uTorrent is present in WebUI: the torrents list, the torrent categorizing panel, the "General", "Peers" and "Logger" tabs, the torrent properties window.
The top search box is there as well, complete with the torrent search engine menu.
The "Settings" dialog is available in its full glory, exposing all the uTorrent options and settings.
There's a "RSS Downloader" button in the toolbar but the functionality itself has not yet been implemented.
To wrap it up, WebUI 0.300 is surprisingly complete and functional for a beta version tagged 0.300, it's very easy to set up and it works just great. Too bad it doesn't work with IE6. Anyway, give it a shot, if you like uTorrent, you will LOVE WebUI.
