Update: CCleaner 2.14.750 with support for Windows 7!

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

Yes, it’s true! CCleaner now supports the unreleased yet Windows 7! Definitely not a YABR, although I’m curious in what ways is Windows 7 different from Vista cleaning at this point :D

What else is new? Well, Chrome cleaning has been improved, Opera cookies are better baked managed and Autocomplete Search only works on XP now.

Of course, there’s also the usual batch of bugfixes (mostly UI and performance related)…

To use the portable version, get the zip package below and unzip it to a folder on your USB drive. It includes all the language packs in DLL files, but you may delete the ones you don’t need (english is embedded in the executable itself, so if you don’t need other languages, all lang-XXXX.dll files can be removed).

Update: 7-Zip 4.61 Beta

Sunday, November 23rd, 2008

The fourth 7-Zip beta in a row after the last stable version (4.57) is now out.

Beside some bugfixes and a new localization, 7-Zip 4.61 beta adds LZMA support to ZIP archives (both reading and creating them).

LZMA is the compression algorithm used by default in the 7z format and provides better results compared to ZIP’s DEFLATE.

New entry: Color Cop - free and powerful color picker

Sunday, November 23rd, 2008

Ever needed an eyedropper tool like the one in Photoshop or other image editors, but for the whole system? Are you a web developer or graphics designer? Do you simply work with colors a lot?

If you answered yes to any of the questions above, I have a treat for you: Color Cop. It’s a free, small and flexible color picker for Windows I can no longer live without.

Beside the obvious color picking business, it’s able to do slightly more advanced stuff like magnification, snapping to web-safe colors and average sampling.

“Picked” colors can be returned in various formats: HTML Hex, Delphi Hex, PowerBuilder, Visual Basic Hex, and Visual C++ Hex. For HTML, the “ommit hex symbol” option is often useful. By the way, the options menu can be accessed by right clicking the program’s window.

Color Cop also includes a color history (so you won’t lose previously picked colors too soon). There’s also a complementary pallette (42 entries), but there are software packages much more suited for that kind of stuff.

To install the latest version (5.4.5), simply download the zip archive and extract it to a folder. Optionally, create a shortcut in a handy location, such as the desktop or start menu. If you prefer to download an installer, there is one available, but it’s for an older version (5.4.3). Both downloads can be found below.

New entry: WebDrive by South River Technologies

Saturday, November 22nd, 2008

WebDrive is a piece of software in the vein of SftpDrive and RedDrive, but more powerful.

Like the previously mentioned products, it maps remote SSH servers as virtual drives on the local machine, enabling seamless file read/write access.

Unlike SftpDrive, it supports other protocols beside SFTP: WebDAV, FTPS, Front Page, regular FTP and Amazon S3.

What sets it apart from RedDrive, which also supports those additional protocols? Well, the fact that WebDrive is still supported and under development by its parent company, unlike RedDrive, which has been discontinued in favor of AnyClient (an inferior solution in my opinion).

What’s that you’re asking? Ah, yes… of course there’s a downside: it’s not free, and it’s not cheap either. At $59.95, it’s considerably more expensive than SftpDrive ($39.99). Still, if you need the extra protocol support (I hear Amazon S3 is popular these days), you might feel it’s worth shelling out the extra bucks and get WebDrive.

Here’s a short, 10-step, WebDrive guide for creating a test SFTP connection to a remote server…

Update: Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0.0.18

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

My favorite email client, Mozilla Thunderbird, has been updated to version 2.0.0.18.

Unfortunately, it’s a just a YABR (yet another bugfix release)… I think Thunderbird really deserves a full update with new features, but it looks like we’ll have to wait some more for that :(
